Narrative:

45 mins before boarding, I and the #4 flight attendant heard a low grinding noise from the ceiling section near the aft l-hand lavatory. It lasted approximately 10-15 seconds. I went to tell the cockpit about the noise as it was unusual. The #2 flight attendant was in the cockpit at that time. She reported that warning bells and lights went off. We had lost l-hand engine. Captain informed me we had 10 mins to land in lit. He indicated that he had no sign of fire in the engine. We pulled out our manuals and turned to the planned emergency checklist section. We prepared the cabin, informed the captain that cabin was ready. Took our jump seats and landed without further incident. According to the cockpit a shaft that runs through the engine had disintegrated, causing the engine to shut down.
