Narrative:
All 3 cockpit crew members thought we heard a clearance for air carrier xxy to descend to FL280. We acknowledged the clearance and left our cruise altitude of FL330. Descended at 1000 FPM passing FL320. ZTL asked our altitude. We stated passing FL320 to FL280. Controller said that clearance was for air carrier xyy and to return to FL330. ATC then apologized for not informing us of a similar sounding call sign. That was the first we had heard of air carrier xyy, as they were not even on frequency yet. I asked center if there was any conflict. He stated, that no conflict existed. Controller was very busy at the time.

Title: ACFT FLC COPIED AND READ BACK DSCNT CLRNC MEANT FOR ANOTHER ACFT WITH SIMILAR CALL SIGN. ON DSCNT, ATC CTLR ADVISED THAT CLRNC WAS FOR ANOTHER ACFT AND RECLRED CREW TO MAINTAIN ORIGINAL FLT LEVEL.
