Narrative:

On climb out, approaching 18000 ft MSL, transition altitude, both captain and first officer were distracted by radio calls from ATC with TA's and missed the climb checklist, thereby not setting altimeters to 29.92. Leveled off at FL290 600 ft low, because of incorrect altitude setting. ZLC advised he showed us 600 ft low and we discovered the incorrect altitude settings, reset and climbed to correct altitude. This incident reiterated to me the importance of attention to transition altitude, and to not let distractions interfere.
