Narrative:
While on descent, center asked us our airspeed. After we stated it, he told us we should be going approximately 250 KTS. Neither the captain nor I heard a speed restr given to us and we are certain he did not. At this time we were given a right turn 30 degrees to sequence us back in with traffic and airspeed change to approximately 250 KTS. Inadvertently the captain turned left 30 degrees instead of right 30 degrees. Once the controller realized our error he turned us further left and then direct byp to join the arrival. There was never a traffic conflict. I feel the reason for us missing the right turn and instead turning left was because of frequency congestion and the controller's insistence that we also missed an airspeed change (he should have just gave us the turn and stopped talking about who was at fault for the airspeed). By the time he finished talking I could not remember which way we were supposed to turn (we had already turned left).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 FLC TURNS OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF CLRNC WHILE CONTEMPLATING DISPUTE OVER AIRSPD CLRNC NEAR BONHAM, TX.
Narrative: WHILE ON DSCNT, CTR ASKED US OUR AIRSPD. AFTER WE STATED IT, HE TOLD US WE SHOULD BE GOING APPROX 250 KTS. NEITHER THE CAPT NOR I HEARD A SPD RESTR GIVEN TO US AND WE ARE CERTAIN HE DID NOT. AT THIS TIME WE WERE GIVEN A R TURN 30 DEGS TO SEQUENCE US BACK IN WITH TFC AND AIRSPD CHANGE TO APPROX 250 KTS. INADVERTENTLY THE CAPT TURNED L 30 DEGS INSTEAD OF R 30 DEGS. ONCE THE CTLR REALIZED OUR ERROR HE TURNED US FURTHER L AND THEN DIRECT BYP TO JOIN THE ARR. THERE WAS NEVER A TFC CONFLICT. I FEEL THE REASON FOR US MISSING THE R TURN AND INSTEAD TURNING L WAS BECAUSE OF FREQ CONGESTION AND THE CTLR'S INSISTENCE THAT WE ALSO MISSED AN AIRSPD CHANGE (HE SHOULD HAVE JUST GAVE US THE TURN AND STOPPED TALKING ABOUT WHO WAS AT FAULT FOR THE AIRSPD). BY THE TIME HE FINISHED TALKING I COULD NOT REMEMBER WHICH WAY WE WERE SUPPOSED TO TURN (WE HAD ALREADY TURNED L).
