Narrative:
We (aircraft X) had landed on runway 9 and were told to clear at taxiway B. We complied. Once clear of runway on taxi B, we were told by tower to cross runway 14 and contact ground on the other side of runway 14. We cleared runway 14. Another aircraft was noticed sitting parked on the taxiway we were entering. We continued taxi onto the taxiway the other aircraft was on and then contacted ground. Ground control asked us if we were on the main taxiway. We acknowledged that we were. We were told that in the future we needed to stop and contact ground prior to movement onto main taxiway since the other aircraft (aircraft Y) had already been issued a taxi clearance. I had made the wrong assumption that the aircraft was holding for us. Events that led to this happening which could be contributing factors were that the first officer was busy with after landing flows, so a timely call on ground was not made. Also, the hold short line to clear once crossing the active runway placed the aircraft too close to the main taxiway. Other aircraft taxiing past may have found it difficult to get past us. The next time, however, if ever in doubt, the aircraft should be stopped and the clearance needs to be clarified.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR E120 FLC MISINTERP CTLR TAXI CLRNC INSTRUCTIONS AND APPARENTLY BLOCK THE TAXI RTE OF ANOTHER ACFT WAITING TO TAXI FOR DEP.
Narrative: WE (ACFT X) HAD LANDED ON RWY 9 AND WERE TOLD TO CLR AT TXWY B. WE COMPLIED. ONCE CLR OF RWY ON TAXI B, WE WERE TOLD BY TWR TO CROSS RWY 14 AND CONTACT GND ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 14. WE CLRED RWY 14. ANOTHER ACFT WAS NOTICED SITTING PARKED ON THE TXWY WE WERE ENTERING. WE CONTINUED TAXI ONTO THE TXWY THE OTHER ACFT WAS ON AND THEN CONTACTED GND. GND CTL ASKED US IF WE WERE ON THE MAIN TXWY. WE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT WE WERE. WE WERE TOLD THAT IN THE FUTURE WE NEEDED TO STOP AND CONTACT GND PRIOR TO MOVEMENT ONTO MAIN TXWY SINCE THE OTHER ACFT (ACFT Y) HAD ALREADY BEEN ISSUED A TAXI CLRNC. I HAD MADE THE WRONG ASSUMPTION THAT THE ACFT WAS HOLDING FOR US. EVENTS THAT LED TO THIS HAPPENING WHICH COULD BE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE THAT THE FO WAS BUSY WITH AFTER LNDG FLOWS, SO A TIMELY CALL ON GND WAS NOT MADE. ALSO, THE HOLD SHORT LINE TO CLR ONCE XING THE ACTIVE RWY PLACED THE ACFT TOO CLOSE TO THE MAIN TXWY. OTHER ACFT TAXIING PAST MAY HAVE FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO GET PAST US. THE NEXT TIME, HOWEVER, IF EVER IN DOUBT, THE ACFT SHOULD BE STOPPED AND THE CLRNC NEEDS TO BE CLARIFIED.
