Narrative:

Aircraft climbing at 4000 FPM on kennedy 7 departure breezy point climb cleared direct rbv climbing to 11000 ft. Reclred left heading 210 degrees then reclred direct rbv during 2 min interval. Problem with radio volume levels -- first officer unfamiliar with particular variant of aircraft and monitoring 2 frequencys simultaneously (unintentionally) had adjusted PF's volume level inadvertently several times during taxi out. Aircraft with similar call sign cleared to 17000 ft PF was turning direct to rbv for second time and climbed to 11500 ft before error was discovered returned to 11000 ft whereupon altitude was queried with ATC who instructed us to climb to 17000 ft.
