Narrative:
Approach control kept us at 11000 ft MSL until turning us onto a right base for runway 16 at den. Was using speed brakes and gear to descend. First officer saw the airport and said it was ok for visual approach. We were cleared for approach, however, when I saw the runway, I felt that we were too high and close in for approach and elected to go around. We were about 7700 ft MSL, informed tower of our intention, and was told to maintain 8000 ft. While returning to 8000 ft, we were given turn to 290 degrees. Re-engaged autoplt while in turn. Autoplt did not capture altitude and noticed this while climbing through 8250 ft. Disengaged autoplt to return to 8000 ft, however, aircraft reached an altitude of 8500 ft MSL before descending to 8000 ft. Aircraft may have been slightly above capture altitude when autoplt engaged. Do not know.

Title: ACR FLC IN A B777 OVERSHOT THEIR ASSIGNED ALT WHEN THEY ENGAGED THE AUTOPLT DURING A GAR AT AN ALT THAT MAY HAVE BEEN ABOVE THE CAPTURE ENVELOPE.
Narrative: APCH CTL KEPT US AT 11000 FT MSL UNTIL TURNING US ONTO A R BASE FOR RWY 16 AT DEN. WAS USING SPD BRAKES AND GEAR TO DSND. FO SAW THE ARPT AND SAID IT WAS OK FOR VISUAL APCH. WE WERE CLRED FOR APCH, HOWEVER, WHEN I SAW THE RWY, I FELT THAT WE WERE TOO HIGH AND CLOSE IN FOR APCH AND ELECTED TO GO AROUND. WE WERE ABOUT 7700 FT MSL, INFORMED TWR OF OUR INTENTION, AND WAS TOLD TO MAINTAIN 8000 FT. WHILE RETURNING TO 8000 FT, WE WERE GIVEN TURN TO 290 DEGS. RE-ENGAGED AUTOPLT WHILE IN TURN. AUTOPLT DID NOT CAPTURE ALT AND NOTICED THIS WHILE CLBING THROUGH 8250 FT. DISENGAGED AUTOPLT TO RETURN TO 8000 FT, HOWEVER, ACFT REACHED AN ALT OF 8500 FT MSL BEFORE DSNDING TO 8000 FT. ACFT MAY HAVE BEEN SLIGHTLY ABOVE CAPTURE ALT WHEN AUTOPLT ENGAGED. DO NOT KNOW.
