Narrative:
Because of construction, parts of taxiway B were closed. Aircraft ahead of us told to 'taxi taxiway H to taxiway B, hold short runway 18L.' we were told to follow that aircraft. Aircraft ahead told to 'turn left on taxiway B, taxi runway 18L.' the intersection is a little confusing because of construction. The aircraft ahead crossed runway 18L (no clearance) and made a left on taxiway east (runway incursion). We made the left at taxiway B and taxied, no incident. Luckily no one was using runway 18L at the time. The aircraft ahead had stopped (short of runway 18L) at intersection hb, facing northeast toward runway 18L, and was told to turn left at taxiway B and taxi runway 18L. From that aircraft's position, looking across the runway, there is a taxiway 'B' sign visible that could have led the crew to believe that 'B' turned left after crossing runway 18L when in fact it is 'east', and 'B' continues straight across. The crew thought they were to cross, then turn left. Solution: 1) better signage in and around that intersection. 2) better ATC communication.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR ACFT TAXIES ACROSS RWY 18L WITHOUT CLRNC. RPTR FO IN ANOTHER ACFT BEHIND, CITES A TXWY SIGN AS BEING MISLEADING AS WELL AS ARPT CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY LENDING TO THE OTHER FLC'S CONFUSION.
Narrative: BECAUSE OF CONSTRUCTION, PARTS OF TXWY B WERE CLOSED. ACFT AHEAD OF US TOLD TO 'TAXI TXWY H TO TXWY B, HOLD SHORT RWY 18L.' WE WERE TOLD TO FOLLOW THAT ACFT. ACFT AHEAD TOLD TO 'TURN L ON TXWY B, TAXI RWY 18L.' THE INTXN IS A LITTLE CONFUSING BECAUSE OF CONSTRUCTION. THE ACFT AHEAD CROSSED RWY 18L (NO CLRNC) AND MADE A L ON TXWY E (RWY INCURSION). WE MADE THE L AT TXWY B AND TAXIED, NO INCIDENT. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS USING RWY 18L AT THE TIME. THE ACFT AHEAD HAD STOPPED (SHORT OF RWY 18L) AT INTXN HB, FACING NE TOWARD RWY 18L, AND WAS TOLD TO TURN L AT TXWY B AND TAXI RWY 18L. FROM THAT ACFT'S POS, LOOKING ACROSS THE RWY, THERE IS A TXWY 'B' SIGN VISIBLE THAT COULD HAVE LED THE CREW TO BELIEVE THAT 'B' TURNED L AFTER XING RWY 18L WHEN IN FACT IT IS 'E', AND 'B' CONTINUES STRAIGHT ACROSS. THE CREW THOUGHT THEY WERE TO CROSS, THEN TURN L. SOLUTION: 1) BETTER SIGNAGE IN AND AROUND THAT INTXN. 2) BETTER ATC COM.
