Narrative:

My student and I were on a VFR simulated instrument flight from oxc to gon. While en route, I contacted pvd approach control and requested a practice approach ILS runway 5 at gon. The controller issued a discrete transponder code which was entered. At the time we were flying the published segment from flibb intersection to mondi intersection. Upon reaching mondi intersection, my student proceeded with aligning himself on the localizer. I asked pvd approach if we were cleared for the approach, and he said no, I don't have you on radar yet. Because we were VFR, I requested to terminate radar assistance and we would deal directly with the tower at gon.
