Narrative:
Clearance was maintain 4000 ft, newhall 5 departure, runway 16R, which states 'cross flm 104 degree radial at vny 1.5 DME fix at or below 1750 ft, then turn left 110 degrees....' after passing 1.5 DME fix below 1750 ft, I began a left turn to 110 degrees and was given frequency change to socal departure 124.6. It may be that the narrative description of the departure conflicts with the pictorial departure as the pictorial may be indicating left turn only, after passing flm 104 degree radial. In any event, socal told me I turned left before they wanted. It may also be they really didn't want me to follow the clearance given, but the time lost in call-up to socal prevented their change in plans. Please refer to government newhall departure 5 chart dec/xa/98.

Title: C525 FLC MAY HAVE TURNED EARLY TO SID DIRECTED HDG ON DEP FROM VNY.
Narrative: CLRNC WAS MAINTAIN 4000 FT, NEWHALL 5 DEP, RWY 16R, WHICH STATES 'CROSS FLM 104 DEG RADIAL AT VNY 1.5 DME FIX AT OR BELOW 1750 FT, THEN TURN L 110 DEGS....' AFTER PASSING 1.5 DME FIX BELOW 1750 FT, I BEGAN A L TURN TO 110 DEGS AND WAS GIVEN FREQ CHANGE TO SOCAL DEP 124.6. IT MAY BE THAT THE NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF THE DEP CONFLICTS WITH THE PICTORIAL DEP AS THE PICTORIAL MAY BE INDICATING L TURN ONLY, AFTER PASSING FLM 104 DEG RADIAL. IN ANY EVENT, SOCAL TOLD ME I TURNED L BEFORE THEY WANTED. IT MAY ALSO BE THEY REALLY DIDN'T WANT ME TO FOLLOW THE CLRNC GIVEN, BUT THE TIME LOST IN CALL-UP TO SOCAL PREVENTED THEIR CHANGE IN PLANS. PLEASE REFER TO GOV NEWHALL DEP 5 CHART DEC/XA/98.
