Narrative:

During climb out of dfw airport, left automatic ignition light came on, followed by left torque fluctuations and torque would drop to zero. This occurred 3 times in a row, then torque gauge dropped to zero. All other engine indication were normal. Called maintenance control (moc) and they advised us to return to dfw. On 2-3 mi final, left engine quit. We declare an emergency, followed memory items and checklist procedures and landed without further incident. Fire rescue looked over aircraft and said it was safe to taxi and we were escorted to the ramp. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a saab 340B and the cause of the engine failure was the failure of the 7TH stage compressor. The reporter said the engine was replaced.
