Narrative:

Cruising at FL330 with first officer flying aircraft on autoplt, ATC requested a 20 degree left turn and the first officer turned 20 degrees right and I did not catch the error due to being distraction. ATC asked our heading and I responded with it and ATC requested us to climb to FL350. We started our climb and got a TA on the TCASII which showed approximately 2000 ft below us. After a 1200 ft climb, ATC told us to return to FL330 and then queried if we turned the opposite direction, which I stated yes. I should have been more alert to the situation than I was. Really no excuse.
