Narrative:
After departing toronto city centre airport, the cargo door annunciator light illuminated at approximately 1200 ft MSL. Departure was notified and we requested a return to field. Tower asked us if we needed any assistance and we declined. Following a normal landing, we taxied into the gate. Having experienced a cargo door light annunciation not extinguishing after ramp personnel initially closed the door properly, I shut down the left engine and had my first officer check the door. He found the door not properly closed and re- closed the door and the cargo door annunciator extinguished. I meanwhile called our operations personnel to notify our dispatch and maintenance of our situation. Toronto operation relayed a re-release from our dispatch. The flight departed and flew to its destination uneventfully. When we got to our destination dispatch informed me they thought we were just a return to gate not return to field. Somehow, there was a breakdown in communication. Company informed me that I should have called them directly and had a local mechanic check the cargo door.
