Narrative:
I flew an aircraft beyond a scheduled (72 hour) maintenance check. I signed the aircraft flight log to do 1 leg from columbus, oh, to washington national airport. By signing, I am saying that the aircraft is safe and legal for passenger service. I hurriedly checked the flight log. The plane had just arrived with a different crew. The log said the next service check (72 hour) is due by feb/xa/99 by XZ00. At a quick glance in a poorly lit cockpit, the 'V' in the date appeared to be a 'west.' it looked like: feb/ww/99. At the completion of our 45 min flight, I began to close out the paperwork for the evening. Part of this is bringing the numbers forward for various scheduled maintenance checks to the next day's page in the aircraft flight log. At this time, I got a better look at the date. I immediately called our company's maintenance controller to check on the correct date. The plane had been flying for over 13 hours in service with 2 other crews.
