Narrative:
Final approach phase of landing. At the point of gear extension, captain extended gear, followed by loud bang. Gear fell, nose failed to lock down. Able to recycle gear same consequences. This was confirmed by a gear horn flaps 30 degrees and the failure of nose gear light to illuminate. Request go around indicated to tower (dtw) we needed to dump. They (ATC) gave us a right turn (landing runway 21R), climb to 3100 ft. We were then given 5000 ft for dump altitude. Followed all company emergency procedures and checklist. Third attempt to extend with down and lock was successful. Emergency vehicles were standing by. Landing was uneventful. Possible frozen landing gear, -20 degrees I realized during descent into dtw.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE NOSE LNDG GEAR OF AN LGT FAILED TO EXTEND IN THE LOCKED DOWN POS DURING FINAL APCH UNTIL AFTER THE LNDG GEAR EXTENSION WAS CYCLED FOR A THIRD TIME AFTER A GAR.
Narrative: FINAL APCH PHASE OF LNDG. AT THE POINT OF GEAR EXTENSION, CAPT EXTENDED GEAR, FOLLOWED BY LOUD BANG. GEAR FELL, NOSE FAILED TO LOCK DOWN. ABLE TO RECYCLE GEAR SAME CONSEQUENCES. THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY A GEAR HORN FLAPS 30 DEGS AND THE FAILURE OF NOSE GEAR LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. REQUEST GAR INDICATED TO TWR (DTW) WE NEEDED TO DUMP. THEY (ATC) GAVE US A R TURN (LNDG RWY 21R), CLB TO 3100 FT. WE WERE THEN GIVEN 5000 FT FOR DUMP ALT. FOLLOWED ALL COMPANY EMER PROCS AND CHKLIST. THIRD ATTEMPT TO EXTEND WITH DOWN AND LOCK WAS SUCCESSFUL. EMER VEHICLES WERE STANDING BY. LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL. POSSIBLE FROZEN LNDG GEAR, -20 DEGS I REALIZED DURING DSCNT INTO DTW.
