Narrative:

We were departing dfw to laredo, tx, on the keene 5 departure. While level at 4000 ft MSL, we had an RA followed by climb instructions. Captain initiated a climb while I notified regional departure of our actions. ATC did not hear our report and instructed us to turn to 170 degrees and descend to 4000 ft. At the time, we had climbed to 4500 ft MSL. We were never alerted to traffic and controller informed us our traffic was at 3500 ft MSL. I also had visual contact after our climb was initiated. Captain immediately descended to 4000 ft after we cleared conflict. Controller never heard our report that we deviated. A company aircraft behind us encountered the same near midair.
