Engine problem during flight, began sputtering. Notified ATC. Used emergency checklist and attempted engine restart. Located united states highway 90 and executed an unscheduled off airport landing on united states highway 90 in new orleans, la. Fuel tanks were empty upon inspection. Exact cause of excessive fuel burn is yet to be determined.

Title: A C172 PVT PLT RUNS OUT OF GAS SHORT OF HIS DEST ARPT AND LANDS ON HWY 90 NEAR MSY, LA.
Narrative: ENG PROB DURING FLT, BEGAN SPUTTERING. NOTIFIED ATC. USED EMER CHKLIST AND ATTEMPTED ENG RESTART. LOCATED UNITED STATES HWY 90 AND EXECUTED AN UNSCHEDULED OFF ARPT LNDG ON UNITED STATES HWY 90 IN NEW ORLEANS, LA. FUEL TANKS WERE EMPTY UPON INSPECTION. EXACT CAUSE OF EXCESSIVE FUEL BURN IS YET TO BE DETERMINED.
