Narrative:

Performed precautionary shutdown of #3 engine due to an oil filter bypass warning light. Captain declined to declare an emergency to ATC. I stated to him that I thought we are required to do so. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a B727-200 and #3 engine oil filter bypass light came on steady and the decision was made to shut down the engine. The reporter said the cause of the filter bypass light coming on was not passed on to the crew by maintenance.

Title: A B727-200 IN CRUISE AT FL310 SHUT DOWN #3 ENG DUE TO THE OIL FILTER BYPASS WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. ENG OIL PRESSURE, TEMP AND QUANTITY NORMAL.

CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A B727-200 AND #3 ENG OIL FILTER BYPASS LIGHT CAME ON STEADY AND THE DECISION WAS MADE TO SHUT DOWN THE ENG. THE RPTR SAID THE CAUSE OF THE FILTER BYPASS LIGHT COMING ON WAS NOT PASSED ON TO THE CREW BY MAINT.
