Narrative:

We were climbing to FL260. We accepted and read back a clearance to climb to FL330. Passing FL280 we were contacted by center and told that we were only cleared to FL260. We told him that we read back climb to FL330. He told us that was a clearance to turn to heading 330 degrees. We misunderstood the heading change to be a climb clearance and the controller did not catch the mistake on the readback.

Title: A DC10 FREIGHTER FLC MISTAKENLY ACCEPTED AND READ BACK A HDG CHANGE CLRNC AS IF IT WAS AN ALT CHANGE CLRNC.

Narrative: WE WERE CLBING TO FL260. WE ACCEPTED AND READ BACK A CLRNC TO CLB TO FL330. PASSING FL280 WE WERE CONTACTED BY CTR AND TOLD THAT WE WERE ONLY CLRED TO FL260. WE TOLD HIM THAT WE READ BACK CLB TO FL330. HE TOLD US THAT WAS A CLRNC TO TURN TO HDG 330 DEGS. WE MISUNDERSTOOD THE HDG CHANGE TO BE A CLB CLRNC AND THE CTLR DID NOT CATCH THE MISTAKE ON THE READBACK.
