Narrative:
When arriving at the aircraft in the early morning, a logbook entry and maintenance signoff was noted. The entry stated that a portion of the nose tire spray deflector was missing. Maintenance signed off the logbook and we applied the appropriate MEL items. It was still dark out and the ramp area was poorly lit. The walkaround was completed with no abnormalities. Upon arrival at the gate at our destination, company maintenance advised us of a small puncture on the under side of the fuselage, apparently occurring when the spray deflector fell off. Due to the location of the puncture and the poorly lit conditions this puncture would have been extremely difficult to detect.

Title: AN MD88 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH A SMALL LOWER FUSELAGE PUNCTURE CAUSED BY A BROKEN NOSE GEAR SPRAY DEFLECTOR SEGMENT.
Narrative: WHEN ARRIVING AT THE ACFT IN THE EARLY MORNING, A LOGBOOK ENTRY AND MAINT SIGNOFF WAS NOTED. THE ENTRY STATED THAT A PORTION OF THE NOSE TIRE SPRAY DEFLECTOR WAS MISSING. MAINT SIGNED OFF THE LOGBOOK AND WE APPLIED THE APPROPRIATE MEL ITEMS. IT WAS STILL DARK OUT AND THE RAMP AREA WAS POORLY LIT. THE WALKAROUND WAS COMPLETED WITH NO ABNORMALITIES. UPON ARR AT THE GATE AT OUR DEST, COMPANY MAINT ADVISED US OF A SMALL PUNCTURE ON THE UNDER SIDE OF THE FUSELAGE, APPARENTLY OCCURRING WHEN THE SPRAY DEFLECTOR FELL OFF. DUE TO THE LOCATION OF THE PUNCTURE AND THE POORLY LIT CONDITIONS THIS PUNCTURE WOULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO DETECT.
