Narrative:

There were 2 aircraft in the pattern for runway 18 at provo airport. One was on final and one was on base. I was holding short runway 18 and allowed both aircraft to land. The second aircraft was doing a touch-and-go and after he was off, I taxied onto the runway. As I was taking off just as I was about to turn crosswind, my passenger and I noticed another aircraft very close to us and it appeared as if it was turning crosswind as well. As soon as I noticed this aircraft, I exited the pattern off the crosswind leg of the pattern. The remedies of this situation or how I feel that near misses like this can be avoided is for provo to be made into a class D airport and for an FAA tower to be provided.
