Narrative:
Clearance was to descend to 13000 ft for a visual approach runway 35R (den). Nearing leveloff altitude, I was identing the localizer identify runway 35R as it was to be used for backup purposes. Radio call to expect visual approach to runway 35L. I immediately went to identify the localizer runway 35L since I was still listening to the NAVAID, then I reaccomplished the approach checklist. Captain realized he had descended through the leveloff altitude and immediately corrected the altitude deviation. (Lowest altitude I saw was 12300 ft.) supplemental information from acn 431973: at about 13800 ft MSL ATC changed runways to 35L.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727 OVERSHOOTS ITS ASSIGNED ALT DURING A DSCNT INTO DEN, CO. THE CREW HAD BEEN ASSIGNED A NEW RWY BY APCH CTLR.
Narrative: CLRNC WAS TO DSND TO 13000 FT FOR A VISUAL APCH RWY 35R (DEN). NEARING LEVELOFF ALT, I WAS IDENTING THE LOC IDENT RWY 35R AS IT WAS TO BE USED FOR BACKUP PURPOSES. RADIO CALL TO EXPECT VISUAL APCH TO RWY 35L. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO IDENT THE LOC RWY 35L SINCE I WAS STILL LISTENING TO THE NAVAID, THEN I REACCOMPLISHED THE APCH CHKLIST. CAPT REALIZED HE HAD DSNDED THROUGH THE LEVELOFF ALT AND IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED THE ALTDEV. (LOWEST ALT I SAW WAS 12300 FT.) SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 431973: AT ABOUT 13800 FT MSL ATC CHANGED RWYS TO 35L.
