Narrative:
At FL310, #3 engine compressor stalled several times and began to fail. I pulled the #3 thrust back to idle. #3 stabilized. We dumped 75000 pounds of fuel and returned to hnl. Emergency was declared. Landing was uneventful.

Title: A DC10 EXPERIENCES AN ENG FAILURE AND AN INFLT ENG SHUTDOWN AT FL310 WHILE 390 MI W OF HNL. RETURN AND LAND EFFECTED.
