Narrative:
I was sitting in the cockpit between flts waiting for passenger and baggage loading and refueling to be completed. The ground personnel gave me the hand signal for setting the parking brake. I made the cardinal error of not physically verifying that the brakes were in fact set. I was thinking that we had already accomplished the before start checklist and had already set the brakes. I gave the brakes are set signal, and the grounds personnel proceeded to remove the chocks. The ramp was slightly sloped so the aircraft began to roll backwards. It had rolled about 5 ft before I realized what was happening and stopped the aircraft and set the parking brake. Fortunately, passenger and baggage loading and refueling were complete. A portable stairway to the forward entry door was slightly damaged, but the aircraft was not damaged and no personnel were injured. The cause of the incident was my lack of awareness and complacency.

Title: A B737-200 WHEN PARKED AT THE GATE HAD THE WHEEL CHOCKS REMOVED AND BEGAN TO ROLL BACKWARDS DAMAGING AN ENTRANCE STAND. INCIDENT CAUSED BY THE FAILURE OF THE FLC TO SET THE PARKING BRAKE.
Narrative: I WAS SITTING IN THE COCKPIT BTWN FLTS WAITING FOR PAX AND BAGGAGE LOADING AND REFUELING TO BE COMPLETED. THE GND PERSONNEL GAVE ME THE HAND SIGNAL FOR SETTING THE PARKING BRAKE. I MADE THE CARDINAL ERROR OF NOT PHYSICALLY VERIFYING THAT THE BRAKES WERE IN FACT SET. I WAS THINKING THAT WE HAD ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED THE BEFORE START CHKLIST AND HAD ALREADY SET THE BRAKES. I GAVE THE BRAKES ARE SET SIGNAL, AND THE GNDS PERSONNEL PROCEEDED TO REMOVE THE CHOCKS. THE RAMP WAS SLIGHTLY SLOPED SO THE ACFT BEGAN TO ROLL BACKWARDS. IT HAD ROLLED ABOUT 5 FT BEFORE I REALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND STOPPED THE ACFT AND SET THE PARKING BRAKE. FORTUNATELY, PAX AND BAGGAGE LOADING AND REFUELING WERE COMPLETE. A PORTABLE STAIRWAY TO THE FORWARD ENTRY DOOR WAS SLIGHTLY DAMAGED, BUT THE ACFT WAS NOT DAMAGED AND NO PERSONNEL WERE INJURED. THE CAUSE OF THE INCIDENT WAS MY LACK OF AWARENESS AND COMPLACENCY.
