Narrative:

On climb out, on vectors to FL230. Passing FL210, began looking for next chart for route to nbc. Began looking for outside traffic and radar presentation. Became occupied with outside traffic and chart location. Climbed through FL230 by 300 ft. Stopped climb and descended back to FL230. With all the sensors and information new fighters provide, more software needs to be directed to assist pilots in route structure. Altitude warning system would have helped in leveloff.

Title: MIL PLT OF A MCDONNELL DOUGLAS F18 OVERSHOT ALT DURING CLB DUE TO LOOKING FOR THE NEXT NAVIGATIONAL CHARTS. HE CORRECTED BACK AT ONCE TO ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: ON CLBOUT, ON VECTORS TO FL230. PASSING FL210, BEGAN LOOKING FOR NEXT CHART FOR RTE TO NBC. BEGAN LOOKING FOR OUTSIDE TFC AND RADAR PRESENTATION. BECAME OCCUPIED WITH OUTSIDE TFC AND CHART LOCATION. CLBED THROUGH FL230 BY 300 FT. STOPPED CLB AND DSNDED BACK TO FL230. WITH ALL THE SENSORS AND INFO NEW FIGHTERS PROVIDE, MORE SOFTWARE NEEDS TO BE DIRECTED TO ASSIST PLTS IN RTE STRUCTURE. ALT WARNING SYS WOULD HAVE HELPED IN LEVELOFF.
