Narrative:
Cleared for ILS runway 25R at approximately 200 KIAS assigned and descending at approximately 1000 FPM. At 5100 ft MSL, controller issued turn left to 180 degrees and maintain 5000 ft. Coupled approach with multiple autoplts on, aircraft descended to approximately 4650 ft MSL during turn and returned to leveloff at 5000 ft. It is unrealistic to expect a leveloff at 5000 ft with those instructions and speed assignment. Maybe the controller expected a descent below assigned altitude and then a return to 5000 ft. We were then given a turn back to intercept final and another approach clearance prior to completing our turn to 180 degrees. The reason the controller issued the turn to 180 degrees and leveloff at 5000 ft was rptedly due to an overshoot by an aircraft on approach to runway 24 (north complex).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757 WAS GIVEN A HDG AND ALT CHANGE WITH ON APCH DUE TO AN OVERSHOOT ON PARALLEL RWY. ACFT DSNDED BELOW ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: CLRED FOR ILS RWY 25R AT APPROX 200 KIAS ASSIGNED AND DSNDING AT APPROX 1000 FPM. AT 5100 FT MSL, CTLR ISSUED TURN L TO 180 DEGS AND MAINTAIN 5000 FT. COUPLED APCH WITH MULTIPLE AUTOPLTS ON, ACFT DSNDED TO APPROX 4650 FT MSL DURING TURN AND RETURNED TO LEVELOFF AT 5000 FT. IT IS UNREALISTIC TO EXPECT A LEVELOFF AT 5000 FT WITH THOSE INSTRUCTIONS AND SPD ASSIGNMENT. MAYBE THE CTLR EXPECTED A DSCNT BELOW ASSIGNED ALT AND THEN A RETURN TO 5000 FT. WE WERE THEN GIVEN A TURN BACK TO INTERCEPT FINAL AND ANOTHER APCH CLRNC PRIOR TO COMPLETING OUR TURN TO 180 DEGS. THE REASON THE CTLR ISSUED THE TURN TO 180 DEGS AND LEVELOFF AT 5000 FT WAS RPTEDLY DUE TO AN OVERSHOOT BY AN ACFT ON APCH TO RWY 24 (N COMPLEX).
