Narrative:
On descent into las, approximately 30 mi southwest leveling off at 9000 ft MSL, flight experienced severe turbulence. Airspeed fluctuated from 160 KTS to over 250 KTS for approximately 15-20 seconds. Flight landed in las with no further incident. At the time there was a company low level area SIGMET for ca-or-identification-nv for occasional moderate chop/turbulence below FL180 to the surface. Although las station was not one of our stations listed in this SIGMET the crew had this information for the area involved. I feel, with the strong low level winds across the region, the event was isolated. In the future when there are strong winds I will look for and request PIREPS for the area flying into so as to provide the crew with the most up-to-date information.
