Narrative:
As a newly minted CFI, my wife finally allowed me to give her a pinch hitter course. Altitude, power, performance has been our central theme. Today would be progression to a long straight-in on ILS runway 18 at hsv. While explaining the setup to the ILS and the particulars of an ASR approach, I deviated from altitude 2900 ft assigned to 3400 ft. Immediately return to 2900 ft. No conflict occurred. Again while 'teaching' in-depth, passed through runway 18R into runway 18L final approach course. Noted immediately and corrected. No conflict occurred. Continued training approach #2 and did it right. Fortunately no conflict arose, but lost basic technique of flying -- fly the airplane -- in my zeal to teach my wife. This has shaken me since I 'feel' like a good pilot, but made 2 basic potentially life-threatening errors. Hopefully this will be something I can build on to prevent and teach prevention in the future. Fixation in any way, shape or form and failure to fly the airplane resulted in these errors.

Title: DURING A TRAINING DEMONSTRATION FLT, INSTRUCTOR PLT FAILED TO MAINTAIN ASSIGNED ALT WHILE INTERCEPTING THE ILS, AND THEN AFTER CORRECTING BACK, FLEW THROUGH THE LOC TO THE FINAL OF THE ADJACENT PARALLEL RWY.

TODAY WOULD BE PROGRESSION TO A LONG STRAIGHT-IN ON ILS RWY 18 AT HSV. WHILE EXPLAINING THE SETUP TO THE ILS AND THE PARTICULARS OF AN ASR APCH, I DEVIATED FROM ALT 2900 FT ASSIGNED TO 3400 FT. IMMEDIATELY RETURN TO 2900 FT. NO CONFLICT OCCURRED. AGAIN WHILE 'TEACHING' IN-DEPTH, PASSED THROUGH RWY 18R INTO RWY 18L FINAL APCH COURSE. NOTED IMMEDIATELY AND CORRECTED. NO CONFLICT OCCURRED. CONTINUED TRAINING APCH #2 AND DID IT RIGHT. FORTUNATELY NO CONFLICT AROSE, BUT LOST BASIC TECHNIQUE OF FLYING -- FLY THE AIRPLANE -- IN MY ZEAL TO TEACH MY WIFE. THIS HAS SHAKEN ME SINCE I 'FEEL' LIKE A GOOD PLT, BUT MADE 2 BASIC POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING ERRORS. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE SOMETHING I CAN BUILD ON TO PREVENT AND TEACH PREVENTION IN THE FUTURE. FIXATION IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM AND FAILURE TO FLY THE AIRPLANE RESULTED IN THESE ERRORS.
