Narrative:

The tower controller cleared us into position and hold for takeoff when the aircraft ahead rotated. Looking left I saw a B767 on short final on runway 27L, tower then cleared us for an immediate takeoff, even though the aircraft ahead, an MD80 was only 10 seconds ahead and not even close to rotation. We were unable to roll that soon and the captain feared if we were to roll forward the B767 would either go around or hit us. Captain made the decision to stay in position and the first officer told tower unable for takeoff. Tower directed B767 to go around at about 300 ft, which we watched from a ring side seat. Potential disaster avoided. This is becoming too common a practice, pushing the limits of safety using minimal traffic separation.

Title: CAPT OF A FOKKER 100 HELD POS RATHER THAN TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD, AND TKOF, AFTER OBSERVING A B767 ON FINAL. TWR CTLR SUBSEQUENTLY SENT THE B767 AROUND.

Narrative: THE TWR CTLR CLRED US INTO POS AND HOLD FOR TKOF WHEN THE ACFT AHEAD ROTATED. LOOKING L I SAW A B767 ON SHORT FINAL ON RWY 27L, TWR THEN CLRED US FOR AN IMMEDIATE TKOF, EVEN THOUGH THE ACFT AHEAD, AN MD80 WAS ONLY 10 SECONDS AHEAD AND NOT EVEN CLOSE TO ROTATION. WE WERE UNABLE TO ROLL THAT SOON AND THE CAPT FEARED IF WE WERE TO ROLL FORWARD THE B767 WOULD EITHER GAR OR HIT US. CAPT MADE THE DECISION TO STAY IN POS AND THE FO TOLD TWR UNABLE FOR TKOF. TWR DIRECTED B767 TO GAR AT ABOUT 300 FT, WHICH WE WATCHED FROM A RING SIDE SEAT. POTENTIAL DISASTER AVOIDED.
