Narrative:
At FL240, hot smell and visible smoke occurred in cabin, followed immediately by dual pack trip. With ATC clearance, descended to 10000 ft. During descent, cabin fumes dissipated. Cabin never exceeded 10000 ft. Landing uneventful. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the captain said that this was his first flight since his IOE, but he was with an experienced first officer who knew the air conditioning and pressurization system well. Apparently the first officer had never seen an overheat that acted so quickly and with both system. After landing, the maintenance personnel opened the access panels to both air conditioning packs after they arrived at the gate and the system were still too hot to touch so they towed the aircraft to the hangar and that was the last time this reporter saw this aircraft. He has not received any feedback from the company reporting program.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MD80 FLC HAD A DUAL AIR CONDITIONING AND PRESSURIZATION SYS TRIP ALONG WITH FUMES AND SMOKE IN THE CABIN. THEY DECLARED AN EMER AND LANDED AT THEIR DEST.
Narrative: AT FL240, HOT SMELL AND VISIBLE SMOKE OCCURRED IN CABIN, FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY DUAL PACK TRIP. WITH ATC CLRNC, DSNDED TO 10000 FT. DURING DSCNT, CABIN FUMES DISSIPATED. CABIN NEVER EXCEEDED 10000 FT. LNDG UNEVENTFUL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE CAPT SAID THAT THIS WAS HIS FIRST FLT SINCE HIS IOE, BUT HE WAS WITH AN EXPERIENCED FO WHO KNEW THE AIR CONDITIONING AND PRESSURIZATION SYS WELL. APPARENTLY THE FO HAD NEVER SEEN AN OVERHEAT THAT ACTED SO QUICKLY AND WITH BOTH SYS. AFTER LNDG, THE MAINT PERSONNEL OPENED THE ACCESS PANELS TO BOTH AIR CONDITIONING PACKS AFTER THEY ARRIVED AT THE GATE AND THE SYS WERE STILL TOO HOT TO TOUCH SO THEY TOWED THE ACFT TO THE HANGAR AND THAT WAS THE LAST TIME THIS RPTR SAW THIS ACFT. HE HAS NOT RECEIVED ANY FEEDBACK FROM THE COMPANY RPTING PROGRAM.
