Narrative:
Crew planned VFR takeoff to pick up IFR in-flight. Last observation and ASOS gave 6 SM and visibility looked good to crew. Shortly after takeoff, heard center say to another aircraft 'mgm special 1 1/2 in fog.' upon landing 30 mins later, checked ASOS at 4 SM. There's no way it could have been less than 4 SM -- my estimation is 6-8 SM. Next time, however, we'll call FSS prior to VFR departure.
