Narrative:
We were climbing out of teb and we were cleared to FL240. I, the first officer and PF had the autoplt on and I had set the heading and altitude select. Passing FL220 ATC gave us direct villa intersection. The captain was not familiar with the intersection and could not find it. Since I had programmed our trimble GPS on the ground, I reached down and pushed direct villa. The autoplt altitude select failed to level off at FL240 and instead pitched up and took us to FL245, followed by a violent pitch down and took us to FL233. Everything happened in about 5 seconds and after I disconnected the autoplt, we leveled off at FL240. ATC never mentioned it and shortly after switched us to the next frequency. I feel that if the captain would have been more familiar with the flight plan route, I would have not had to reach down to the GPS and I would have been able to catch the autoplt fail sooner.

Title: A CPR FLC CLBING AN N275 (FAA CIVIL CODE) NEAR TEB FAILED TO LEVEL AT THEIR ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: WE WERE CLBING OUT OF TEB AND WE WERE CLRED TO FL240. I, THE FO AND PF HAD THE AUTOPLT ON AND I HAD SET THE HDG AND ALT SELECT. PASSING FL220 ATC GAVE US DIRECT VILLA INTXN. THE CAPT WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE INTXN AND COULD NOT FIND IT. SINCE I HAD PROGRAMMED OUR TRIMBLE GPS ON THE GND, I REACHED DOWN AND PUSHED DIRECT VILLA. THE AUTOPLT ALT SELECT FAILED TO LEVEL OFF AT FL240 AND INSTEAD PITCHED UP AND TOOK US TO FL245, FOLLOWED BY A VIOLENT PITCH DOWN AND TOOK US TO FL233. EVERYTHING HAPPENED IN ABOUT 5 SECONDS AND AFTER I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT, WE LEVELED OFF AT FL240. ATC NEVER MENTIONED IT AND SHORTLY AFTER SWITCHED US TO THE NEXT FREQ. I FEEL THAT IF THE CAPT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE FLT PLAN RTE, I WOULD HAVE NOT HAD TO REACH DOWN TO THE GPS AND I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CATCH THE AUTOPLT FAIL SOONER.
