Narrative:
Due to weak radio transmission/reception, had overhead speaker volume up. However, this subsequently caused xcockpit squeal on xmissions. Captain turned speaker volume down to alleviate. Floater went to headset/boom microphone. Removed this later to eat. When lack of overhead radio traffic was noticed, made call to london control who advised he had been attempting contact for 7 mins.
