Narrative:
ATC facility: jax. Location: 70 mi south of taylor, vicinity of gainesville, fl. Did not paint any cells or turbulence in our vicinity although the WX radar did paint a cell 40 mi southwest of our position. We were at FL270 experiencing continuous light chop in cloud. Suddenly we experienced a couple of severe jolts which disengaged the autoplt and an altitude loss of 300 ft was experienced. Then we experienced heavy precipitation for a few seconds and the chop then became just moderate. The seat belt sign was already on and the #1 flight attendant had just made a walk-through of the main cabin prior to the severe jolts. After the severe chop which lasted only a couple of seconds the #1 flight attendant came and reported that all passenger and cabin crew were ok and no one was injured. The first officer bumped his head on the movable sunshade but was not cut or visibly injured. The remainder of the flight into tpa went without incident. No passenger made any comments or complaints upon deplaning the aircraft in tpa.
