Narrative:
Between 10500-11000 ft chicago told me to level off, traffic 12 O'clock position, and I missed the distance. As I started to lower the nose. I saw the other aircraft at my 11:30 O'clock position, moving slightly from my left to right. I watched the aircraft for a couple of seconds to confirm its track, and then I made a left hand turn. This was not an abrupt maneuver, and I turned only 20-25 degrees from my flight path. Chicago told me dsm had handed me off to them too soon, and they were going to 'follow-up' on this. I'm glad it was VMC, or it could have gotten very close.
