In sum: first officer of B767 finds several switches out of normal position on preflight check. One switch out of position is not found. Later, captain discovers the fuel imbal light is indicating an actual imbal which is subsequently corrected. Reporter realizes that he must learn to see what he is looking at.

Title: B767-300 MISSES WRONG SWITCH POS ON PREFLT WHICH EVENTUALLY RESULTS IN FUEL IMBAL.
Narrative: IN SUM: FO OF B767 FINDS SEVERAL SWITCHES OUT OF NORMAL POS ON PREFLT CHK. ONE SWITCH OUT OF POS IS NOT FOUND. LATER, CAPT DISCOVERS THE FUEL IMBAL LIGHT IS INDICATING AN ACTUAL IMBAL WHICH IS SUBSEQUENTLY CORRECTED. RPTR REALIZES THAT HE MUST LEARN TO SEE WHAT HE IS LOOKING AT.
