Narrative:
Numerous computer monitors and equipment have been placed on top of the perimeter tower consoles. They block line of sight to critical areas of runway xings and the runway. This haphazardly installed equipment also tears the tower shades. The lack of line of sight to critical movement areas will eventually result in an operational error or accident. This equipment needs to be installed in the consoles, not on them. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: some minor changes have taken place. Facility management has removed 2 monitors from the top of the tower console. Reporter said that the equipment that is still left on the center island console blocks the view of the local controller from observing an aircraft that is holding in position on runway 2R. Reporter also stated that a ucr had also been filed, and was closed out as a result of management saying that they would form a committee to look at the problem. Nothing has happened.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE PLACEMENT OF EQUIP ON THE TOP OF TWR CONSOLES HAS OBSTRUCTED THE CTLR'S VISION FROM THE TWR.
Narrative: NUMEROUS COMPUTER MONITORS AND EQUIP HAVE BEEN PLACED ON TOP OF THE PERIMETER TWR CONSOLES. THEY BLOCK LINE OF SIGHT TO CRITICAL AREAS OF RWY XINGS AND THE RWY. THIS HAPHAZARDLY INSTALLED EQUIP ALSO TEARS THE TWR SHADES. THE LACK OF LINE OF SIGHT TO CRITICAL MOVEMENT AREAS WILL EVENTUALLY RESULT IN AN OPERROR OR ACCIDENT. THIS EQUIP NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED IN THE CONSOLES, NOT ON THEM. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: SOME MINOR CHANGES HAVE TAKEN PLACE. FACILITY MGMNT HAS REMOVED 2 MONITORS FROM THE TOP OF THE TWR CONSOLE. RPTR SAID THAT THE EQUIP THAT IS STILL LEFT ON THE CTR ISLAND CONSOLE BLOCKS THE VIEW OF THE LCL CTLR FROM OBSERVING AN ACFT THAT IS HOLDING IN POS ON RWY 2R. RPTR ALSO STATED THAT A UCR HAD ALSO BEEN FILED, AND WAS CLOSED OUT AS A RESULT OF MGMNT SAYING THAT THEY WOULD FORM A COMMITTEE TO LOOK AT THE PROB. NOTHING HAS HAPPENED.
