Narrative:
On downwind to runway 17C dfw, we descended 400 ft below our assigned altitude of 6000 ft. Approach control had issued traffic at 2 O'clock and we had a TCASII alert. We were looking for the traffic as approach control gave us a turn to base. We were anticipating the turn and lower while looking for the traffic. We asked approach control to confirm our assigned altitude and they cleared us to 4000 ft and told us traffic had been cleared for us.
