Narrative:
Landed runway 4R ewr, exited runway at taxiway K. As I was committed to turning on taxiway K, the ewr tower controller apparently said to take the next taxiway left. Being committed to taxiway K, I came to a full stop behind a B757. (I never heard the controller's instructions, as I was busy controling the aircraft in order to expedite my aircraft off the runway, which I did successfully.) the controller asked, after I had stopped, to 'take the next taxiway left.' this meant that I would have to turn the aircraft back onto runway 4R (an active landing runway). I queried him twice if I was cleared to taxi back onto runway 4R to taxi to taxiway left. He said yes the second time! The controller could and should have requested me to use taxiway left on final approach or on the rollout, not at the time of commitment to turning on taxiway K. Also, his instructions to 'take the next taxiway' after I stopped were less than clear (ambiguous).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TWR CTLR ISSUED LATE RWY TURNOFF INSTRUCTIONS TO THE FLC OF AN ACR MLG RESULTING IN THE FLC TURNING OFF THE RWY TOO SOON AND STOPPING BEHIND A B757 WHICH WAS BLOCKING THEIR WAY.
Narrative: LANDED RWY 4R EWR, EXITED RWY AT TXWY K. AS I WAS COMMITTED TO TURNING ON TXWY K, THE EWR TWR CTLR APPARENTLY SAID TO TAKE THE NEXT TXWY L. BEING COMMITTED TO TXWY K, I CAME TO A FULL STOP BEHIND A B757. (I NEVER HEARD THE CTLR'S INSTRUCTIONS, AS I WAS BUSY CTLING THE ACFT IN ORDER TO EXPEDITE MY ACFT OFF THE RWY, WHICH I DID SUCCESSFULLY.) THE CTLR ASKED, AFTER I HAD STOPPED, TO 'TAKE THE NEXT TXWY L.' THIS MEANT THAT I WOULD HAVE TO TURN THE ACFT BACK ONTO RWY 4R (AN ACTIVE LNDG RWY). I QUERIED HIM TWICE IF I WAS CLRED TO TAXI BACK ONTO RWY 4R TO TAXI TO TXWY L. HE SAID YES THE SECOND TIME! THE CTLR COULD AND SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED ME TO USE TXWY L ON FINAL APCH OR ON THE ROLLOUT, NOT AT THE TIME OF COMMITMENT TO TURNING ON TXWY K. ALSO, HIS INSTRUCTIONS TO 'TAKE THE NEXT TXWY' AFTER I STOPPED WERE LESS THAN CLR (AMBIGUOUS).
