Narrative:
First officer was flying leg. He was told to descend and maintain 5000 ft. He set up the flight director to capture altitude. Somehow it failed to capture altitude. We recognized the altitude bust at 4600 ft. He grabbed the aircraft and brought it back to 5000 ft. The first officer was very grave over the altitude bust. I plan on being more diligent in watching my first officer's flying.

Title: FLC OF A DEHAVILLAND DASH 8 OVERSHOT ALT DURING DSCNT DUE TO LACK OF MONITORING THE FMC ACFT CTL.
Narrative: FO WAS FLYING LEG. HE WAS TOLD TO DSND AND MAINTAIN 5000 FT. HE SET UP THE FLT DIRECTOR TO CAPTURE ALT. SOMEHOW IT FAILED TO CAPTURE ALT. WE RECOGNIZED THE ALT BUST AT 4600 FT. HE GRABBED THE ACFT AND BROUGHT IT BACK TO 5000 FT. THE FO WAS VERY GRAVE OVER THE ALT BUST. I PLAN ON BEING MORE DILIGENT IN WATCHING MY FO'S FLYING.
