Narrative:

While climbing out of sju airport, departure control assigned us a heading so that we would not overtake a slower aircraft ahead of us. That heading was taking us straight to a thunderstorm. I requested a deviation around the WX, and as I recall, we were authority/authorized to deviate as necessary around a lot of buildups ahead of us. During the deviations, the controller told us he had lost our transponder and asked us our heading. When we responded, he said we had been previously assigned a heading and we were on a different one. I believe what really caused the problem was that there was a misunderstanding on the part of the controller in the sense that we needed to do several deviations around the WX and not just a heading.

Title: COMS BTWN PLT AND CERAP CTLR REGARDING REQUEST TO DEVIATE AROUND WX QUESTIONABLE.

Narrative: WHILE CLBING OUT OF SJU ARPT, DEP CTL ASSIGNED US A HDG SO THAT WE WOULD NOT OVERTAKE A SLOWER ACFT AHEAD OF US. THAT HDG WAS TAKING US STRAIGHT TO A TSTM. I REQUESTED A DEV AROUND THE WX, AND AS I RECALL, WE WERE AUTH TO DEVIATE AS NECESSARY AROUND A LOT OF BUILDUPS AHEAD OF US. DURING THE DEVS, THE CTLR TOLD US HE HAD LOST OUR XPONDER AND ASKED US OUR HDG. WHEN WE RESPONDED, HE SAID WE HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY ASSIGNED A HDG AND WE WERE ON A DIFFERENT ONE. I BELIEVE WHAT REALLY CAUSED THE PROB WAS THAT THERE WAS A MISUNDERSTANDING ON THE PART OF THE CTLR IN THE SENSE THAT WE NEEDED TO DO SEVERAL DEVS AROUND THE WX AND NOT JUST A HDG.
