Narrative:
I was returning to hnl receiving VFR TA's from ZHN. Approaching norby (a fix about 5 mi outside class B airspace). I became concerned about getting a clearance and requested a handoff to approach. This is a normal procedure. In fact normally the handoff is automatic (without asking). However on this day I was informed the handoff was not possible (for whatever reason) 'squawk VFR contact approach on 119.1.' I reported to approach 26 mi out 262 degree radial mkk. I realized I was on the edge of the hnl class B airspace and began a turn to the south to avoid entry. Upon landing in honolulu I checked my ground track on my GPS (good feature) it clearly showed my turn to turn to the south a 1/4 mi inside class B airspace. I should have gone into a hold at norby until I had received a clearance or until below 2000 ft MSL, the floor of the airspace at that distance. I was led down the garden path a little and a bit complacent.
