Narrative:

Flight was operated as air carrier wxz, a revenue trip from cvg to ewr. Some hours after arriving at ewr, I was called by air carrier crew scheduling and informed that the aircraft was down for maintenance and I would not be flying out that evening. I then called air carrier maintenance control to inquire about the nature of the problem and was informed that the aircraft (xyz) had recently come out of a heavy 'D' check and that the 'lap seal' inspection had not been accomplished and signed off. My concern is that I had operated an airplane that was not 'legal' to fly although I had received and signed a release that indicated that the airplane was legal and released as airworthy by aircraft maintenance.
