Narrative:
While deviating for numerous thunderstorms in the jacksonville, fl, area, ATC (frequency 127.4) cleared us to deviate northeast of course and direct omn VOR when able. He then switched us to another frequency. This new controller cleared us direct heatt when able. When we advised him we were turning direct heatt, he switched us back to frequency 127.47. This controller was surprised we were back with him. We advised him we had been cleared direct heatt and were deviating slightly right of course for a buildup. He advised us of a route deviation and that he had to expedite an aircraft. He then told us to call the center. With numerous thunderstorms all around, all aircraft were deviating in the area -- including us. We were still more than 220 NM from heatt when cleared direct with many thunderstorms between us and heatt.
