Narrative:
Ground instructed us to taxi to runway 7. En route to runway 7 the captain inadvertently taxied onto the runway mistaking it for the parallel taxiway. The first officer was head down determining takeoff data and did not observe the captain taxi across the hold short line. Ground observed our aircraft crossing the hold short line and immediately told us to clear the runway. Simultaneously, tower instructed the lear to abort its takeoff roll. Contributing factors: the 'before takeoff check' is accomplished en route to the runway after the aircraft has departed the gate area and before the aircraft crosses the hold short. Among other things, the 'before takeoff check' requires the first officer to look up 3 items (takeoff power settings, trim settings and V speeds) in 3 different pubs. This is time consuming and does not allow the first officer to devote his/her full attention to assisting the captain in taxiing the aircraft to the runway. Corrective action: the captain and first officer should brief a taxi plan during the crew brief. Once a taxi plan is briefed and completely understood, both the captain and first officer will be mentally prepared for taxiing the aircraft to the runway. Takeoff data should be looked up while the aircraft is still at the gate. If data are determined at the gate, the first officer will not be head down for an extended period of time while the aircraft is taxied to the runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A SAAB SF340 TAXIED PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE DURING TAXI OUT CAUSING THE TWR CTLR TO CANCEL TKOF CLRNC FOR A LEARJET ROLLING.
Narrative: GND INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI TO RWY 7. ENRTE TO RWY 7 THE CAPT INADVERTENTLY TAXIED ONTO THE RWY MISTAKING IT FOR THE PARALLEL TXWY. THE FO WAS HEAD DOWN DETERMINING TKOF DATA AND DID NOT OBSERVE THE CAPT TAXI ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE. GND OBSERVED OUR ACFT XING THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND IMMEDIATELY TOLD US TO CLR THE RWY. SIMULTANEOUSLY, TWR INSTRUCTED THE LEAR TO ABORT ITS TKOF ROLL. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: THE 'BEFORE TKOF CHK' IS ACCOMPLISHED ENRTE TO THE RWY AFTER THE ACFT HAS DEPARTED THE GATE AREA AND BEFORE THE ACFT CROSSES THE HOLD SHORT. AMONG OTHER THINGS, THE 'BEFORE TKOF CHK' REQUIRES THE FO TO LOOK UP 3 ITEMS (TKOF PWR SETTINGS, TRIM SETTINGS AND V SPDS) IN 3 DIFFERENT PUBS. THIS IS TIME CONSUMING AND DOES NOT ALLOW THE FO TO DEVOTE HIS/HER FULL ATTN TO ASSISTING THE CAPT IN TAXIING THE ACFT TO THE RWY. CORRECTIVE ACTION: THE CAPT AND FO SHOULD BRIEF A TAXI PLAN DURING THE CREW BRIEF. ONCE A TAXI PLAN IS BRIEFED AND COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD, BOTH THE CAPT AND FO WILL BE MENTALLY PREPARED FOR TAXIING THE ACFT TO THE RWY. TKOF DATA SHOULD BE LOOKED UP WHILE THE ACFT IS STILL AT THE GATE. IF DATA ARE DETERMINED AT THE GATE, THE FO WILL NOT BE HEAD DOWN FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME WHILE THE ACFT IS TAXIED TO THE RWY.
