Narrative:

While on a heading of 070 degrees on a vector for bos ILS runway 4R, just northeast of pvd, I understood bos approach to give us an altitude assignment of 6000 ft MSL (ie, we were level at 11000 ft MSL). I then set 6000 ft in the altitude window as the captain, who was not flying, responded to approach with our call sign and the new altitude assignment. Bos approach did not respond (frequency 120.6). While passing 9000 ft MSL, bos approach queried us about our altitude, and we told him passing 9000 ft MSL for 6000 ft MSL. He told us to level at 9000 ft and that we had not been cleared to 6000 ft.
