Narrative:
We were cleared over csg VOR to clear a restr area which is different from the normal direct rrs route. First officer was flying, I was talking to company about WX at destination on second radio. When I returned, he said ATC requested 90 degree turn to avoid restr area. We made turn to clear area and continued normally. We did not enter restr area but missed csg VOR by about 5 mi. First officer thought he could cut corner. I should have been paying closer attention while on #2 radio.
