Loupe 9 departure out of sjc depicts turn at 1.8 DME sjc VOR. We misread 1.8 NM in 'map mode' as DME. Initiated turn at sjc VOR .5 DME. VOR mode was displayed in first officer's HSI. We turned inside 1.8 DME arc to 120 degree heading. Estimate we were 1.3 DME inside the 1.8 DME turn point.
