Narrative:
Engine started running rough and I was concerned that it may quit. I advised ATC and they asked if I wished to declare an emergency. I said yes, I want to make a precautionary landing. ATC suggested I apply carburetor heat, which I did. As I began my descent, the engine began to run smoother. ATC asked if the engine was running any better and I said yes, but I still want to make a precautionary landing to have the airplane checked out. As I could not make a safe landing initially, I initiated a go around. After landing, I had a discussion with the local aircraft mechanic, and he said the problem may have been water contamination. Prior to flight, the fuel tanks were topped off and I checked each sump for water -- none was found. I took off from santa barbara after a check of the airplane and continued on to my destination.

Title: C152 PLT WITH LOW EXPERIENCE FINDS ENG RUNNING ROUGH. WITH ATC ASSISTANCE DIVERTS TO ENRTE ARPT AS A PRECAUTION.
Narrative: ENG STARTED RUNNING ROUGH AND I WAS CONCERNED THAT IT MAY QUIT. I ADVISED ATC AND THEY ASKED IF I WISHED TO DECLARE AN EMER. I SAID YES, I WANT TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG. ATC SUGGESTED I APPLY CARB HEAT, WHICH I DID. AS I BEGAN MY DSCNT, THE ENG BEGAN TO RUN SMOOTHER. ATC ASKED IF THE ENG WAS RUNNING ANY BETTER AND I SAID YES, BUT I STILL WANT TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG TO HAVE THE AIRPLANE CHKED OUT. AS I COULD NOT MAKE A SAFE LNDG INITIALLY, I INITIATED A GAR. AFTER LNDG, I HAD A DISCUSSION WITH THE LCL ACFT MECH, AND HE SAID THE PROB MAY HAVE BEEN WATER CONTAMINATION. PRIOR TO FLT, THE FUEL TANKS WERE TOPPED OFF AND I CHKED EACH SUMP FOR WATER -- NONE WAS FOUND. I TOOK OFF FROM SANTA BARBARA AFTER A CHK OF THE AIRPLANE AND CONTINUED ON TO MY DEST.
