MEL item 23-4 was added to aircraft xyz on jul/xa/99 (flight deck to cabin service interphone inoperative). Did not realize that MEL could not be added to an aircraft operating in a passenger/cargo combination operation. Flight crew brought this to attention of air carrier maintenance control and dispatchers.
